Computer manufacturers, Taiwan contract manufacturers in particular like High-Tech Computer (HTC), started out doing contract manufacturing work for bigger-named brands.
But that started to change in 2006, when the company that is known worldwide as HTC began to design its own smartphones and tablet PCs and is now chipping away at the market shares of industry giants like Apple and Nokia. It has doubled its sales volume since 2009 alone. After years of keeping a low profile, Taiwanese firms have realized that they can follow the example of HTC and Acer, and can use their expertise accumulated from contract work to design and sell their own products under their own brands. New entrants to this space include the huge contract PC maker Quanta Computer and Micro-Star International, will will release its first tablet PC on June 1.
