New Computer Design Options From Acer

The Taiwan-based computer maker Acer, which is best known in the US for low-priced consumer computer design, will for the first time be selling storage and x86 commodity servers in the US. The company will be offering 16 servers in the US, including tower, rack, blade, and rack multi-node models. The systems will be available with either Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron chips, and Acer will also be reselling Hitachi storage products.

Selling servers in the US will put Acer in direct competition with Dell and HP for the business PC market. To be successful they will need to provide good onsite service in addition to low prices. They will need to develop a thorough partner network to accomplish this. And while Acer servers will be competitively priced, they will not necessarily be cheaper then Dell and HP.
